One hour, three hours or five? Safari lengths in Levi

The snowmobile safaris around Levi come in a handful of lengths, and each one buys a different kind of day. A short taster suits nervous beginners, while the longest ride includes a fishing hole and lunch by a fire. This guide compares them side by side.

Five lengths, five kinds of day

The safaris compared on this site run from one hour to five. Length changes more than the time on the snow, because it decides whether you get a warm drink stop, whether you ride after dark and whether lunch comes with it.

One hour, the taster

Arctic Circle Snowmobile Park's 1-hour safari (~$110) goes through the forest with an instructor. You ride in pairs and swap places to take photos, with the speed tailored to the group. It rates 4.8 from 240+ reviews on GetYourGuide.

It suits beginners and families, with children aged 1–13 in a sled behind the guide. It also works as a test if you are unsure how you will cope with the cold.

The catch is that one hour shrinks once you count dressing and the briefing, and no hot drink stop is listed. The meeting point is Levintie 1585, on the Kittilä side of Levi, so plan how you get there.

Two to three hours, the classic safari

This is where most visitors land. Two tours on this site fill 2–3 hours, both with a warm drink on the way and both capped at 12 riders, which keeps the line short behind the guide.

Wild Nordic's forest safari (~$140) stays in Levi's forest on maintained tracks. The guide makes photo stops and serves hot berry juice. Hotel pickup is included, and you choose whether to drive or ride.

Viator users give it 5.0 from 80+, and on GetYourGuide it holds 4.8 from 200+ reviews. Its catch is that an odd-numbered party may share a sled with a stranger, unless you pay extra for a sled of your own.

Tokka Safaris' Levi Fell loop (~$150) circles the fell over about 30–35 km (19–22 miles) of varied terrain. The break is a hot drink and a bun in a Lappish café, and the listing says you may see reindeer on the way.

Viator shows 4.9 from 140+ reviews for it. Tokka's catch is the €1,500 self-liability unless you pay the €35 waiver, which our page on who pays for a damaged sled explains.

Round Levi Fell with a café stop

About 30–35 km in 2–3 hours with a hot drink and a bun on the way. Never more than 12 riders follow the guide.

Three hours after dark

Two evening rides last about three hours each, and both head away from the village lights. Arctic Circle's northern lights safari (~$177, often shown lower) includes transport from set points in Levi as well as warm juice and travel insurance.

Groups reach 32 riders. The aurora is not guaranteed, the operator does not cancel for weather, and the ride holds the lowest score of the five, 4.5 from 620+ reviews on GetYourGuide.

Safartica's evening safari (~$166) gives you 1.5–2 hours of driving in the forest and a campfire with grilled sausage and pastry. Its catch is that most of the three hours pass in the dark, with the aurora not promised and no Viator listing.

Groups on the Safartica evening can reach 50. Both evening rides are covered in more depth in chasing the aurora by snowmobile.

Five hours with a rod and lunch

Safartica's ice fishing day (~$233) is the longest ride on this site. You cross frozen water to a fishing spot, the guide drills a hole and sets up the rod, and lunch is soup cooked Lappish style over an open fire.

It rates 4.9 from 210+ reviews on GetYourGuide. The catches are the highest price here and a possible group of 50. On top of that, no one under 12 may ride, and the fish are never promised.

Sitting still on the ice is colder than driving, so dress for both halves of the day. The full program is laid out in ice fishing on a Lapland lake.

Matching the length to the rider

  • Nervous first-timers start with one hour, or Wild Nordic's 2–3 hours for photo stops and a juice break
  • Families with small children keep it short, since the cold wears on children in a sleigh (see riding with children)
  • Couples after scenery pick Tokka's fell loop or Wild Nordic's forest safari
  • Aurora hunters book an evening ride and keep a spare night in case of cloud
  • Anyone wanting a full day takes the ice fishing trip, as long as nobody is under 12

Time beyond the ride

Every length comes with extra time on both sides. Before the ride you dress in the kit and hear the briefing, and afterwards you hand everything back. Some tours also add a transfer from your hotel or a set point.

That matters most on the shortest ride, where the preparation can feel nearly as long as the driving. If this is your first time on a sled, read what a first ride involves before you choose.

Hour by hour

Choosing how long to ride

Is a one-hour snowmobile safari long enough?

For a first taste, yes. Once you add dressing and the briefing, though, the time on the snow feels short, and the 1-hour listing names no hot drink stop. If you already know you like the cold, 2–3 hours gives more time on the snow.

How far do you ride on a 2–3 hour safari?

Tokka's loop around Levi Fell covers about 30–35 km (19–22 miles). Wild Nordic's forest safari gives no distance, only the length of 2–3 hours with photo stops.

Which safari is the longest?

Safartica's ice fishing day at five hours, with a ride over frozen water to a fishing hole and a soup lunch cooked on an open fire. It is not open to children under 12.

Do the evening rides guarantee the northern lights?

No. The aurora depends on clear skies and solar activity, and neither evening ride promises it. Arctic Circle does not cancel for weather, so a cloudy night is still paid.

Which length suits a family with young children?

The 1-hour safari, where children aged 1–13 ride in a sled behind the guide. Longer rides in the cold can be hard going for small children sitting still in a sleigh.
